The comments from Tom Curley of The Associated Press and News Corp.s Rupert Murdoch come as the media industry struggles in the Internet age. Many news companies contend that sites such as Google have reaped a fortune from their articles, photos and video without fairly compensating the news organizations producing the material.
“We content creators have been too slow to react to the free exploitation of news by third parties without input or permission,” Curley, the APs chief executive, told a meeting of 300 media leaders in Beijing.

James Murdoch, the 36-year-old executive in charge of News Corp.s businesses in Europe and Asia, spoke late Friday at the Edinburgh International Television Festival - 20 years after his father delivered a keynote speech at the same event.
“In this all-media marketplace, the expansion of state-sponsored journalism is a threat to the plurality and independence of news provision, which are so important for our democracy,” Murdoch said.
The BBC is subsidized by the British government and funded, in part, by television licenses that consumers must pay if they use a television.

The Loeb Awards, among the highest honors in business journalism, have been presented for 36 years by Anderson School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles. They were established in 1957 by Gerald Loeb, a financier and founding partner of E.F. Hutton, to encourage quality reporting in business, finance and the economy.

Peter Rice, president of boutique movie label Fox Searchlight, which distributed Oscar-winners “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Juno,” was promoted to chairman of entertainment, Fox Broadcasting.
The networks entertainment division buys and broadcasts such long-standing Fox shows as “American Idol,” “24,” “The Simpsons,” “King of the Hill” and “Family Guy.”
Peter Liguori, whose contract was to expire this summer, is stepping down from the post immediately, the company said.
