Starbucks Lures Calorie-conscious Ny Coffee Buyers, Study Says

Mandatory calorie posting led to a 6 percent reduction in calories per transaction at Starbucks New York City stores, according to the study, published on the universitys Web site yesterday. Congress is considering making the disclosure a national requirement after some states introduced similar laws aimed at curbing obesity.
“Calorie posting causes consumers to not only substitute products within stores, but also to substitute across stores,” the authors said. “Consumers who were routinely purchasing coffee and donuts at Dunkin Donuts may have switched to buying coffee at - - - - >

Profits Embolden Us Companies, But Profit Lacking

While recent bullish profit reports have fueled the stock market, a true economic revival will depend on consumers opening their wallets. So far, theres little evidence of that.
Big names such as Caterpillar, IBM, Whirlpool, Pfizer, 3M and Lowes boosted profit forecasts for 2009 following a slew of second-quarter earning reports that blew past lackluster expectations. Yet the gains arent coming from sales.
Rather, companies are slashing everything from jobs to officer perks to boost the bottom line and please investors who have responded by pushing the major stock indexes to their highest levels in months.
